Global trade network patterns are coupled to fisheries sustainability

چکیده

Abstract The rapid development of seafood trade networks alongside the decline in biomass many marine populations raises important questions about role global fisheries sustainability. Mounting empirical and theoretical evidence shows importance on commercially exploited species. However, there is limited understanding how networks, such as differences connectivity duration, affect In a analysis over 400,000 bilateral flows stock status estimates for 876 fish invertebrates from 223 territories, we reveal patterns between network indicators sustainability using dynamic panel regression analysis. We found that fragmented with strong within group countries weaker links those groups (modularity) are associated higher relative biomass. From 1995 to 2015, modularity fluctuated, number connections (degree) increased. Unlike previous studies, no relationship or duration Our results highlight need jointly investigate trade. Improved coordination partnerships authorities organizations present opportunities foster more sustainable fisheries.

Mapping Global Fisheries Patterns and Their Consequences

Despite increasing reports of fisheries collapses world wide, investigations of the effects of fishing on the global marine environment have been constrained by the paucity of fisheries landings data on suitable spatial scales. Working to overcome this, we have developed new databases and approaches that demonstrate basin-scale reductions in biomass and landings due to intensifying fishing effo...

Biocomplexity and fisheries sustainability.

A classic example of a sustainable fishery is that targeting sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay, Alaska, where record catches have occurred during the last 20 years. The stock complex is an amalgamation of several hundred discrete spawning populations. Structured within lake systems, individual populations display diverse life history characteristics and local adaptations to the variation in spawnin...

Sustainability of deep-sea fisheries

As coastal fisheries around the world have collapsed, industrial fishing has spread seaward and deeper in pursuit of the last economically attractive concentrations of fishable biomass. For a seafood-hungry world depending on the oceans’ ecosystem services, it is crucial to know whether deep-sea fisheries can
